Our Mission

Our mission is to promote authentic African perspectives through a variety of African books, including fiction, non-fiction, and children's literature written in, or translated into, English. We aim to redress the negative presumptions about Africa, satisfy the reader's interest in diverse expressions, and serve the needs of African immigrants and minorities interested in seeing a more nuanced representation of their experiences.

Iskanchi Magazine

Inspired by “Iskanci,” the Hausa word for mischief, irreverence, and non-conformity, Iskanchi Magazine publishes shorter innovative works that examine what the experimental form looks like in the African literary context.

Iskanchi Magazine takes its name from iskanci, a Hausa word that carries the spirit of mischief, irreverence, and refusal. The magazine is drawn to writing that strays from the expected path: work that unsettles form, troubles convention, and makes room for the strange, the unruly, and the difficult to contain. It publishes bold, experimental African writing across genres, with selected work from the magazine gathered in the annual Best African Experimental Writing anthology. Read the latest issue
