Fiction Readers for Iskanchi Magazine

Iskanchi Magazine is looking for volunteer fiction readers! Ideal candidates are avid readers of short fiction (especially experimental short fiction) who care about strong storytelling and have experience in collaborative reading environments. Publication history in literary journals is not required, but a plus.

Editors

Iska Press is seeking editors to support the developmental and line editing of selected manuscripts and magazine pieces. We publish innovative, globally minded writing, with a focus on African and diasporic voices.

Responsibilities:

• Provide developmental feedback on structure, character, pacing, and narrative arc
• Perform line edits to strengthen clarity, voice, and style
• Collaborateclosely with authors to refine their work
• Work with the editorial team to prepare pieces for publication

Ideal Candidates:

• Strong background in fiction and/or nonfiction craft
• Experience with developmental editing or line editing (formal or workshop-based)
• Comfortable giving clear, constructive feedback
• Work with the editorial team to prepare pieces for publication
• Reliable and able to meet deadlines

This is a remote, project-based role with flexible timelines.

We are seeking designers who understand that a book is not only read—it is experienced. We’re looking for those attentive to the quiet work of the page: spacing, rhythm, margins, type—how a text breathes, and how it translates visually.

This role focuses on the interior life of the book and magazine: typesetting, layout, and the careful shaping of text for publication.

What the work involves:

• Typesetting manuscripts for print and digital formats
• Designing clean, intentional interior layouts for books and magazine issues
• Working in Adobe InDesign to prepare publication-ready files
• Applying consistent styles, grids, and typographic systems
• Collaborating with editors to ensure the design supports the voice of the work

Accountant /Financial Coordinator

We are seeking someone to help steward the financial life of a small, independent literary press. This role sits quietly behind the scenes, ensuring that the work—books,stories, the labor that shapes them—remains sustainable and well-supported.

What the work involves:

• Tracking income and expenses across press and magazine operations
• Managing budgets, invoices, and payments
• Maintaining clear, organized financial records
• Assisting with financial reporting and basic forecasting
• Supporting the team in making informed, responsible financial decisions

• Experience in accounting, bookkeeping, or financial administration
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
• Familiarity with accounting tools (e.g., spreadsheets or bookkeeping software)
• Someone reliable, discreet, and comfortable working independently
