Angolan author João Melo’s second short story collection—"Filhos da Pátria” (English: “Sons of Motherland”) —has been included in the list of Angola’s 50 essential books. This list was compiled by the government commission commemorating the country’s 50th anniversary of independence (November 11, 2025), with advisory input from the Angolan Academy of Letters, the Angolan Writers' Union, and Agostinho Neto University.
First published in Luanda by Nzila in 2001, the book was also released in Portugal by Caminho that same year, and in Brazil by Editorial Record in 2008.
The list of 50 essential titles in Angolan literature comprises works grouped into three milestones: titles published between 1845 and 1950; titles published between 1950 and 1975; and titles published from 1975 to 2025.
